Caroline County’s Story

Caroline County, Virginia, includes the towns of Bowling Green, Corbin, Hanover, Ladysmith, Milford, Port Royal, Rappahannock Academy, Ruther Glen, Sparta and Woodford. Bowling Green is the county seat of Caroline County. As of the 2000 census, the population was 22,121. Caroline County, Virginia was established in 1728 from Essex, King and Queen, and King William counties. It was named for Caroline of Ansbach, the wife of King George II of Great Britain.

Caroline County history is replete with significant events, people and locales. During the Colonial Period, for example, Caroline County was the birthplace of thoroughbred racing in North America. Arabian horses were imported from England to provide the basis for American breeding stock. Caroline County is also home to Meadow Farms Stables, the birthplace of perhaps the greatest racehorse of all time, Secretariat, winner of the 1973 Kentucky Derby and Triple Crown.

Patriot Edmund Pendleton played a large role in the Virginia Resolution for Independence (1775) and Caroline native, John Penn, was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. William Woodford served as an officer in both the French and Indian War and American Revolution. Explorers William Clark and his slave, York, were members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition (1803); both were born near what is now Ladysmith, Virginia in Caroline.

During the Civil War Confederate troops under General George E. Pickett fought Union troops near Milford in 1864. Confederate General Stonewall Jackson died in Guinea after being shot by his own troops at Chancellorsville. John Wilkes Booth, the assassin of President Lincoln, was shot by federal troops in Caroline County.

Today, the Stonewall Jackson Shrine, a 40-acre historic site is operated by the National Park Service. The nearby cities of Fredericksburg, Richmond and Washington, D.C. are easily accessible and provide a wide variety of cultural, social and athletic events.

In addition to its historic setting and attractions, Caroline County has an extensive recreation and parks program that residents can enjoy year-round. Local service organizations sponsor seasonal recreational activities for the public, including softball leagues, karate, ballet, and special events for both children and adults. There are 10 ball fields, four tennis courts, numerous private swimming pools and an 18 hole public golf course that also has private membership. Fort A.P. Hill, a designated cooperative wildlife management area, provides excellent hunting and fishing opportunities.

The Rappahannock and Mattaponi Rivers are used extensively for boating and fishing. he Rappahanock River follows Caroline's eastern border, providing opportunities for boating, fishing, wildlife watching and water sports. Visitors and residents with only an occasional flair for the wild can rent a canoe, kayak or jon boat in Port Royal. Paramount's King's Dominion, located just 20 miles south of the county, is a large amusement park offering several different activities daily throughout the season including, one of a kind attractions and stunning shows with Hollywood glamour. A waterpark is also available for enjoyment during the summer months.
