Spotsylvania County, Virginia, in the Washington-Arlington-Baltimore metro area, was named after Gov. Alexander Spotswood, a pre-Revolutionary British governer of the colony of Virginia. Its county seat is Spotsylvania Courthouse. The independent city of Fredericksburg is located in the northeast corner of the county but is politically separate.

At the dawn of European settlement of the "New World," the Spotsylvania area's historic past began with a skirmish near the Rappahannock River between American Indians and a group led by the famous explorer Capt. John Smith, renowned in legend and literature as the husband of the Indian Princess and heroine Pocahontas.

Spotsylvania's colonial roots commence in 1721, when the then-British Colony of Virginia created a vast new county that stretched past the Blue Ridge Mountains by seceding parts of Essex, King and Queen, and King William counties. The independent City of Fredericksburg was formed from Spotsylvania County territory in 1728. Other historic attractions within the county include the first commercially successful ironworks in North America; a slave revolt attempted in the 1810s; and one of the nation's most productive pre-1849 gold mines.

But, Spotsylvania County is probably best-known for the battles fought on its soil during the Civil War. Because of Spotsylvania's strategic location between the Confederate and Union armies, several major battles were fought in the county, including ones at Chancellorsville, the Wilderness, Fredericksburg, and Spotsylvania Court House, one of the bloodiest battles of the war. More than 100,000 troops from both sides died in Spotsylvania.

As of the 2000 census, the population was 90,395 but based on current population predictions, Spotsylvania County is projected to become one of the fastest growing counties in the nation.
